I recently met Jillian Rose at a EPA-SoCal event and I immediately knew I had to get to know her. She was wonderful to talk to and great to get to know. Throughout her life she’s enjoyed snapping photos and it has been her life experiences that has brought her to be on of LA’s best photographers! Her work is beautiful and very well thought out. Jillian uses her creativity and design style in her work. I love that she finds the right angles and lighting for the perfect picture. Below are a few of our favorite Jillian Rose photos!
What advantages do you have when working with a coordinator?
OMG never underestimate the value of a coordinator! They make the wedding day run so smoothly. Often times when I shoot weddings that do not have a coordinator I find that a lot of time is spent running back and forth with other vendors making sure the events are on schedule. With a coordinator you have a “go to” person who is in charge of keeping things on schedule. It’s just so nice to have that one person who knows what is going on with everything.
What inspires you?
So many things inspire the way I shoot…. Sometimes when I am working out or running I listen to music and picture how I would shoot the video for my favorite songs using still photos. Also, one of the walls in my office is covered with some of my favorite images torn from an Anthropologie catalog or Vogue magazine. I love getting inspiration from some of my favorite publications.
What can a bride experience when using your services?
Most importantly I am extremely passionate about what I do and work very hard to create memories for my couples on their wedding day. It kind of goes in hand with why I decided to choose photography as a career. It makes me smile to know that my clients will be reminiscing over the photos I made for them on one of their most memorable days.
How did you decide on photography?
Great question! I’ve always been sentimental and one of my favorite ways to reminisce is through photographs. I always had a camera on me and loved to take photos of my friends. In junior high I used to make my two best girlfriends dress up in cute outfits and pose outside for our faux model shoots. I’d give them props, hats and other ridiculous accessories and make them sit in trees while I took their picture. In my old room at my parents house there is a box full of old photos from elementary school through my first years in college. Every time I am home for Christmas, I sit down on the floor of my old room with a glass of wine, turn on my favorite music and flip trough old photos for hours. I just love to remember the times I’ve had with friends and family.
What was your first real paying job?
When I was 15 I got a summer job scooping ice cream at Baskin Robins. I had just moved from the San Fernando Valley to Thousand Oaks so all of my high school friends were in Northridge. I would spend every single weekend out there hanging out with my best friend. One particularly hot August day I was scheduled “on call” (like I was a doctor or something?!) at the ice cream shop. I never thought they would actually have me come in. Well, they did and I was in the valley with no car so I wasn’t able to make my shift. They called and told my mom to tell me that I was fired! It was the one and only job I was ever let go from.
Getting Personal With Jillian Rose
I’m a California native born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. As long as I can remember I have loved taking pictures but never thought I could actually make a living doing what I was passionate about. In 2007 I shot my first wedding and fell in love. Still, not having the confidence to take the leap full time, I kept a day job while shooting on the weekends. It wasn’t until planning my own wedding in 2009 that I decided I wanted to be a full-time, professional wedding photographer and that’s when I started Jillian Rose Photography!
Currently I live in Santa Monica with my husband and when I am not shooting I spend my time riding bikes along the beach boardwalk, traveling, taking road trips with no agenda or planned destination, cooking, garage sale-ing and just recently I picked up gardening! Did I mention I have an obsession with cake and cupcakes?
